What is a jam class?

Andy's jam classes focus on playing songs together as a group. This is with the intention of working towards performing live either at open mic nights, Andy's end of term performance nights or in a band/ duo or group of your own!

Who is it for?

We have a great group of people who regularly attend. Therefore, new attendees need to complete an application process and be approved to attend by Andy.

To help you know whether this event is right for you, consider the following;

New attendees should be at an intermediate playing level

This generally means you need to be comfortable with playing barre chords, have started with some single note picking and have a good repertoire of songs already. Learn more about what that means here and here.

No previous experience of playing with other is necessary

You do not need to have played with anyone before as this is what this program aims to give you! However, you do need a confidence and competence in your own playing as the focus of the sessions is on how to improve beyond the basics.

New attendees should have a good repertoire of at least 10 songs

We cover many songs at the jam nights and often learn many new songs during a single night. New attendees should be comfortable learning new songs fairly quickly and be ideally want to begin their journey of learning to play lead guitar, improvising and perhaps even songwriting.

    The regular workshops currently happen every 3 weeks in a local function room. We try to strike a balance between learning full songs that the whole group can play together, smaller group work where songs are learn in pairs or groups of three, and improving aspects of guitar playing throughout.

    Particular focus is given to how to learn and remember more songs faster, improvising for lead playing, improving playing technique, strumming and rhythm, practical music theory along with musicianship and performance tips.
