Welcome to the Brighton student chat area!
This is for those currently attending Andy's regular Brighton guitar workshop sessions to keep everyone up to date with what they are working on, get help from Andy, suggest songs and to keep in the loop of any new events.
Those interested in attending future workshops can ask questions in the comments below and find out what we get up to!
In the near future, you guys will be able to create posts on loads of topics and I hope for this section to become a real hub for guitarists in the Brighton area. We'll categorise each topic so it doesn't become overwhelming and we can all benefit from our shared guitar knowledge!
Attendees of the Brighton workshops - Let me know what you've been practicing in the comments below!

Also I’m Planing on attending my local open Mic next Tuesday 6th http://www.thestanley.com starts at 21:00, if you want to play get there a little before. It’s a friendly one the guy that hosts it is very accommodating. His Name is Karl check him out here http://www.kxbband.com/
I have been practicing the Major scale, following Andys mini course, finding it tricky doing it backwards ( when moving the first 5 notes along the fret board).
I'm at a gig on the Tuesday 6th, but will definitely get to this open mic in upcoming weeks Bill!
Been working on « half the world away » as well as « redemption song » and « brown eyed girl » Practising singing and playing standing up.
Andy’s acoustic lead has been a really helpful and currently trying the « Maggie May « solo for a future try out with the group
Have really enjoyed meeting up and jamming with some of the others from the group.
Happy to help trialling the app Andy and looking forward to tomorrow’s session.
Top tips from the last session
Just thought I would try to summarise the key points I took from Andy’s coaching at the last session.
The main thing seemed to be about adding more dynamics and light and shade using some of the following;
1. Start tunes playing more softly ( when appropriate ) so you have somewhere to go with the tune later on
2. Think about playing different parts of the song softer or more loudly. ( and to add a personal point, in general play softer during singing and be louder at other times , although this isn’t a hard and fast rule given the actual feel and dynamics of the song being played )
3. Add variety to strumming -
down strums focus on lowest ( from low E ) 3 strings and up strums on the highest strings.
Have a go at palm muting, chucks etc
4. Think about controlled and focused breathing when singing, and especially to “over the top” of the higher notes.
Hope this is useful and would be good if others add stuff I’ve missed or things that could be explained differently
