Welcome to the new Guitar Talk section!

Posted by Andy on 27th February 2018

Initially this section will be a blog around guitar related subjects. Over time, the plan is for this to become a guitar community and forum, where you guys can post questions or ideas and myself and other website members can leave comments, help out where we can and most importantly - talk guitars!

Initially, only I can write new posts. We’ll be adding the feature where you guys can post about any guitar and music related topic that you like soon.

But YOU can comment below right now if you are signed in to your account!

So, help me out a little - let me know in the comments what guitar questions you have! I will then write a few posts around those topics and help out where I can.

Still having trouble with barre chords?

Thinking about getting some effects pedals but don’t know where to start?

Have you not practiced in a while and need a bit of motivation or focus in your playing?

Let me know what you’re struggling with, or just general questions in the comments below!!

Great idea, Andy :)

By Bill on 28th February 2018 at 17:57

Hi Andy, to start you off, I’m working on your Major Scale mini series. First 5 notes moving them up the fret board seems to be going not too bad, but trying to play the same notes backwards I’m finding that, the hardest part, any advice or is it just a case of perseverance?

Thanks Bill

By Tony on 28th February 2018 at 19:37

Hi Andy, Bill and all, i'm currently practising 'Wish you were here' solo, 'High and Dry' and 'Fall at your feet', been at them for a few days now and its going good.

What's everyone else practising at the moment??

By Andy on 1st March 2018 at 09:48

Thanks Jo! More features will be added soon :)

Bill - If you can play the notes ascending OK, then  it's just a case of keeping at it to get it coming back down. The major scale really is the core of everything at an intermediate level - so it's well worth your time, especially as you're learning how to play it all over the neck with that lesson!

Tony - Fall at your feet is a great addition. We'll definitely go through each of the songs you've listed at the next jam, I think they will all become regular favorites :)

This is a great idea Andy. Bill, similar problem to you as although I have sort of got the "hang" of the scales, I am struggling to use them to make any sort of melody or riff over a backing track other than going up and down the scales?

By Andy on 1st March 2018 at 11:06

Andrew; that's super common and where everyone starts - but THIS lesson shows you step by step exactly how to make playing a scale sound like a melody! There's 5 steps, follow them and you'll at least get started with it  https://www.andyguitar.co.uk/online-lessons/how-to-improvise-with-the-major-scale-acoustic-lead-guitar-6/

Hi Andy I’m interested in beta testing the app on Android as I have moved from iPhone to Android recently .

By Paul on 5th March 2018 at 19:09

Hi andy

Found it and happy to be here

By Clint on 5th March 2018 at 20:23

Missed you on Facebook man. Guess I'd better move on with the times and start using the other methods to get my #andysarmy vibe back. Still learning and my plan is to get stuck into your intermediate course throughout spring/summer. Just been plonking around with all ive learnt from you so far and just having fun with the guitar cant believe its now been a year since i started leaning. Looking forward to your app. X

Hi Andy - never used Facebook but I wish you well with getting it sorted.

I have always found up-strumming awkward; do you change the angle of the pick? is the technique different for chords as opposed to single notes?

Also, I only get a really good sound from strumming a chord when I use a 0.46mm nylon pick; with thicker ones, I seem to lose some of the "body" of the sound - any thoughts? (Guitar is Epiphone SG Special with 10s strings)

All the best, Bob.

Hi Andy,

I'm all in to beta test your app on Android. All the best!

By Phil on 5th March 2018 at 22:13

Sorry to hear about your Facebook account ..... going forward, there's got to be an alternative.

Best of luck with all you decide and do Andy....

Hope this is the right place for this, as it may help others too.

I'm still at the absolute beginner stage, although I'm getting on well with Level2 lessons, I'm still on Level1 songs.  I was struggling with U2's When Love Comes To Town, so I stepped back to Love Me Do.

In the video, at about 7:04 you say the chords on the chord sheet line up with the words.  But they don't.

Am I reading it wrong?  Is it my screen display?  Is the jellynote website display wrong? Is there another online chord sheet you recommend?

Hi again Andy!  This is a blessing in disguise for you Andy!!  Love what you have come up with and really looking forward to keep on following you through here, on Twitter, and would love to check out your new app!!  Awesome ideas and ingenious!  :)   I love learning from you, especially learning cover songs!  FB has been on my "bad values list" for awhile.  FB has caused a bunch of problems politically and with other matters, and is going down the tubes.

By Zane on 5th March 2018 at 23:38

can you do a video on how to play don't stop believing a acoustic version

By John on 6th March 2018 at 10:01

Hi Andy, talk & the app will be a great addition, I’m an iPhone user so when will the app be available for iPhone/iPad?

By Diane on 6th March 2018 at 18:31

Hi Andy

Glad you updated us on your Facebook issues -wondered where you had gone! Great idea with this area to talk guitars and looking forward to the new app. Hopefully see you at your next Leeds Workshop

All the best

By Aida on 7th March 2018 at 08:15

Hi Andy wandered what had happened thanks for letting us know

By Gail on 7th March 2018 at 18:20

Hi, Andy, from Pennsylvania USA!  I'm so happy to see this here, since I quit Facebook sometime ago. (Funny how tampering in international politics is allowed, but providing guitar lessons is not).  I'm working on two things right now: the fingerstyle course and also trying a bit of lead guitar. I only wish I were in the UK so I could attend your workshops!  And since we're talking - I was quite surprised to see you move down South and I hope you remain a Northerner to the core!

By Gail on 7th March 2018 at 18:57

I forgot to say, I'd love to be a 'beta' user for the app!  I'm on iOS.

By Paul on 9th March 2018 at 19:35

Hi Andy shame about the live Facebook always tried to catch it hopefully you can get round it somehow? Id like if possible for you to do a lesson on the knobs (no idea of the technical term) on the electric guitar and the amp settings to create different sounds. I saw a short you tube clip of Eric Clapton showing how he got a different effect by just turning the tone etc but he wasnt really doing a lesson.

By Andy on 12th March 2018 at 09:22

Thanks for all your amazing comments, I've read them all!

Hard for me to answer so many questions in one post - so feel free to re-post your questions in one of the new topic sections so I can reply and help you out more! https://www.andyguitar.co.uk/talk/

App will be released in a max of 2 months. I'll be in touch for beta testers in around a month fingers crossed!
