In this video
Before diving into the exercise itself, the lesson covers four key principles of perfect fretting hand technique that become increasingly important at intermediate level. The exercise then uses two-finger hammer-on combinations — index to middle, index to ring, and index to pinky — across all six strings, giving you a safe and balanced way to build the small muscles and ligaments in your hand.
What You'll Learn
• Four key principles of perfect fretting hand technique
• How to use two-finger hammer-on combinations as a warm-up
• Why lighter pressure leads to better and faster playing
• How thumb and finger position changes across the strings
• Why even, balanced hand development matters at this stage
Four Points of Perfect Fretting Hand Technique
Finger placement right up against the fret
Minimal pressure
Correct finger angle depending on which strings you're on
Thumb position at the back of the neck
These four things form the foundation of good technique. At intermediate level, lighter touch becomes especially critical. Too much pressure is the single biggest thing that will slow your progress.
The Two-Finger Hammer-On Exercise
The exercise works through hammer-on combinations — index to middle, index to ring, and index to pinky — moving from string six to string one. The goal is evenness: the picked note and the hammered note should sound as similar as possible in volume and tone. This builds the hand muscles in a balanced way before you start applying specific techniques.
Building Evenly Before Getting Specific
Think of this like building a foundation before adding anything on top. Just as a bodybuilder wouldn't start on the heaviest weights, you want to develop ligament strength and even muscle development before moving into more specific or demanding techniques. This exercise is the safest and most effective way to do that early in your intermediate journey.
