Jam Track 32 - String bending, pedals and Nirvana Player study

In this video

This Jam Track explores the Grunge sound by blending the songs About a Girl and Smells Like Teen Spirit to create an authentic sounding 90s Grunge-era tune.

The progression uses E, G, D, and C in 3 distinct sections: clean with chorus and reverb, heavy distortion with the "brown sound" on the Boss Katana and a more lead guitar tone with Chorus and reverb again.

This demonstrates how guitarists from the mid-80s onwards could finally switch sounds mid-song using pedals and amp switching.

Main Learning Points in this Jam Track:

  • Section 1: The clean open chords with pattern D - D U D U D U

  • Section 2: E5-G5-D5-C5 power chords with palm muting

  • Tips on keeping the right hand moving for that explosive grunge sound

  • 16th embellishment strumming for that Nirvana rhythm (Smells Like Teen Spirit)

  • Main Solo includes: whole step bends and staying entirely on middle dots (frets 3-5-7-9)

  • Phrasing: two-fret slides at the start of each phrase
