Chromatic Enclosures

In this video

I introduce chromatic enclosures, one of the defining techniques of bebop jazz. By surrounding a target chord tone with a diatonic note above and a chromatic note below, you create lines with built-in tension and resolution that sound instantly professional.

What you will learn:

  • Chromatic enclosure structure — diatonic note above, chromatic note below, resolving to a target arpeggio note

  • Bebop style foundation — how chromatic enclosures define the bebop sound and elevate your lines

  • 8th note triplets — fast triplet runs through arpeggio shapes preceded by a chromatic approach note
