Bass Song 16 - Wake Me Up When September Ends

Welcome to this video where we're covering how to play the bass part to Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day. This is part of the Andy Guitar Band programme. And we've got 4 play-along videos uh as part of every tutorial and then a separate videos also in a playlist on YouTube. It's gonna be really fun. This is quite a simple bass part. I'm gonna be using a pick because uh Mike from Green Day commonly uses a pick to play this song and normally uses a pick in general causes Green Day are a punk band. Um, Chris, uh, the member of the band who's playing bass in the Andy guitar band, is using his fingers, and I'll be able to show you guys, you know, exactly how you can do that as well if you wish to. You'll be able to see that live footage later in this video. But the first part where the bass is introduced is about halfway through the song, and it's on a C note. Resolving to the G note because this song is in the key of G. So these are both at the 3rd fret, Wake me up. When September. And that would be with 8th notes or 8th picking. We've covered that sort of thing plenty by now in this course, so check out some earlier videos if this is all seeming too quick or too much for you. Um, the verses have this lovely descending little sequence. That is starting off with a G note, going to a D note, which is like 12th fret of the D string. So that's 10th fret to 12th fret. Essentially mirroring what the drum part had just done, doom doom doom doom ja. Then the first finger moves down by 1 fret, this would be a 9th fret, which is why we want to do this one with always with our first and little finger, so we'd have. Again to that rhythm of the drums. They're moving down to 7th threat and 9th threats. And 5th and 7th threat. So that was down the first finger. Uh, descends from G, F sharp, that is, that is 10th fret. To 9th. 7th And then 5th, finishing at 3rd fret, wing. When September That is all our verse section. And then into the secondary part. And so that was from the G. A 3rd fret to 2nd fret as a passing note, so we're only briefing on that one. E, the root note of the minor chord. At the 2nd fret, the 3rd fret, which is a C. And that same sequence again. The 2nd time it It finishes at the 5th fret on. All of that section one more time. Su Second fret. And the same thing Fret and then to 5th fret. And then we'd slide up. And do the verse part again. So as part of this series we're learning to play along with my band, where you can see all parts being played and we start off just a little bit slower, so this next clip you're gonna see is at 75% of the speed, uh which you can do with any live recordings on YouTube. Um, by adjusting the settings, we're gonna go from when the base is introduced and just cover this little part first, and then we'll look at the bridge separately. Here it comes, perhaps the first time viewing this section, just watch to see exactly what happens, what you're gonna be copying. Then try playing along and make sure you get this bit first before moving on. Here it comes, enjoy playing along. Now let's have a look at that bridge section where we have this descending little part. And we're gonna have some fun playing along uh to the full thing after this clip, but make sure you get these sections individually first before we try and string it all together. Here it comes. So that is how to play all sections of this song, but it is a long song, so it's not going to be easy to put all this together. What we're gonna look at now is the full song, but we're going to start just to skip to the, uh, don't bore us, skip to the chorus, we're gonna skip to when the bass is introduced on this clip. There's a full sort of um all the band footage in a separate video. Which I'll link to at the end of this video, but from when the bass part starts is what we're interested in in this tutorial. Remember you're in control, you can slow the video down using the feature on YouTube, and we don't expect everyone to get it right first time. The idea is all of this series teaching you exactly how to play along to full songs, and you're also able to see all the parts being played. Not only on the bass, but by the rest of the band. It's gonna be really fun. Take your time, make sure you're getting the notes right, study the video footage to see exactly what's happening, and I really hope you enjoy and get that feeling of playing along with a real band. Of course you can play along to Green Day and other live footage and things like that, but here you'll be able to really see what the bass is doing.
