Bass Song 18 - I Bet You Look Go On The Dancefloor

name. This is how to play I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor by the Arctic Monkeys. Arctic Monkeys are from High Green, just on the outside of Sheffield, about a 10 minute drive from where I was born and bred in Wombwell, just on the outside of Barnsley. Shout out to anyone watching from South. Yorkshire. And this video is of course from the Andy Guitar Band programme. I hope plenty of you guys start a band and follow in the Arctic Monkeys' footsteps, as have the Sherlocks recently. Great band, The Sherlocks, check them out. This song is in the key of F. So we will be playing notes largely, almost exclusively from the F minor pentatonic scale. Well worth the run up and down those notes before we start with this, we have a lot of uh syncopated rhythms which means they're a little bit offbeat, a little bit jagged, um, but we're gonna be playing this largely at the start of the second fret. That is the rhythm to that hectic intro. Then once the lead guitar part has started, I believe it's just staying on the 2nd fret. pedalling uh eighth notes, 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. I'm of course using a pick for this one and this is quite a punk song really in many ways, or at least punk influenced indie. So uh it tends to be a pick that will get that kind of tone. So that was the two parts. And then Which will get us through the intro before the first riff we have starts properly. The sequence begins at the 4th fret, which I'm playing with my little finger, and I have my thumb very low, which is in the more kind of. Proper style of playing bass, many people could play that with the thumb over the top. Which is a bit more comfortable perhaps, but I encourage you to play it in this form if you've never tried that already, it's a really good thing to try and get into. First finger at the 2nd fret. Open string, open a string, and then the second fret on the thickest string. Once we have that, we want to keep this right hand kind of moving um in a in the 8th grid that we that we started off with. Similar to how any guitarist amongst you might have kind of strummed eighth notes and then missed out some strums while keeping the right hand moving, it's exactly the same principle here, one more time. What you will see is er Chris, the bass player from the Andy Guitar Band, you'll see him in the footage. Playing it up here and even using The first finger for a lot of that, that's because we're here we're playing a C, B, and an A, and those are the same notes here. But by this time in the uh filming on, on the deer, er Chris was having a bit of bother with his A string where it was actually popping out of the nut, the string actually kept moving out cos he was kinda picking it so hard and uh and rocking out so much. So yeah, it's good to know. That those are exactly the same notes. But when I've checked out various live footage of the Arctic Monkeys, this is where it's played. Let's have a look just at that intro and verse now from the live band footage that we took on the filming day. I'm gonna slow this down to 75%, and I want to encourage you guys to play along to this, but if nothing else, you'll be able to really see what happens and when the changes happen and try and get this structure down. After this we're gonna look at the chorus, but here's the intro and verse coming up. So I hope that went well for you, uh, feel free to rewatch that or come back to it if you need in the coming days so you can really learn this great song. But, uh, the chorus is much trickier. Uh, we have a little riff, but there is a way that we can simplify this just by playing root notes, which are the lowest note or the base note of the chord. That'll be F, then A. then A. And we could just play this chorus just to kind of get through the song. I bet that you look good on the dance floor. I don't know if. romance, don't know what you're looking. OK, don't have to go for the full riff if it's too much for you at the moment. I'd rather you play this song. practise playing along with a band, it will teach a lot of good habits for you guys. Um, after that, it happens again, but the last note isn't the F, it would be the C at fourth fret. So that second half would be, I bet that you look good on the dance floor, dancing to electro pop like a robot from 1984. 9 OK. Uh, full proper way, includes the same root notes, but we add this little riff. Just those 3 notes. 3 at the 4th fret. Secondret on the D string, then back to the A string at the 4th fret. As an example. That is that bass part, it's much trickier, um, one of the hardest riffs in this whole series actually, so don't be afraid if this is, uh, been too much for you at the moment. That's exactly part of what this series is all about, for you to take on the trickier parts of songs only when you're ready, you're in control with this series. So that part one more time. And I'd be picking as one note, I'll be picking very close to where the bridge is here rather than here, cos the strings move an awful lot, these bass strings really move when you pick them heavy. And we can pick them. On my base, at this side of the pickups, cos it's, it's a much better position to pick from. So I'm going down, up, down, importantly there as well. Down, down, down, up, down. And then the A string. It's the open air. Open E Second frat Finishing On the 4th fret of the D string. Second time round, 34. That will get us back into the verse. Let's have a look at just that chorus now, and I'm gonna play this one along with you. We're gonna go from your name isn't Rio, but I don't care for sand. Uh, so get ready, bang of a bang, go, we're gonna go. You have the option. Of the full way of playing it, remember I'm gonna slow this down slightly, or just the root notes and we're gonna be going at 75% speed. Let's work through this together, take a few attempts if you need them. Your name isn't Rio, but I don't care for sand, here we go. If you can do that, that was great. If you couldn't do this part, if that's too much for you, just do root notes for now. Make sure this is a song that you can play all the way through, and then just work on those technical bits over the coming days, OK, that's the idea of this series. Um, the middle eights, or There Ain't No Love No Montagues or Capulets, I would play that. Oh, there ain't no love, no. That was the open A to the open E. It's a second front Same thing again, open A. Opening And then it's essentially Just like the intro again, so the only extra bit. Open A, oh there ain't no love no, open E, and then second frets, just banging tunes and DJ sets. Dirty dance. Dreams of naughtiness. And every time, working towards the end of the song, last chorus, well, I bet that you look good on the dance floor, so we stopped, we didn't play on the F. We come in. Dance floor, I don't know if you're looking for a man, so I don't know what you're looking for, or, well, I bet that you look good on the dance floor. OK? The very ends pop like a rose. for And that's how we play. I bet that looks good on the dance floor. Let's go for a full play along now.
