Bass Song 19 - Song 2

This is how to play song 2 by Blur. This video is part of the Andy Guitar Band programme where we're learning 21 songs on the bass guitar, and then playing them along to the Andy Guitar Band, which filmed these songs in their entirety. Hope you're enjoying this series so far. This is one of the few overdriven or distorted bass lines that we have, which is really fun. Apparently on the original recording in a hungover day in the studio, apparently, uh Alex James. Used a Marshall Shredmaster um as the overdrive pedal for this song, which I don't have, but I do have a Marshall Drive Master, which is one of my favourite um kind of vintage guitar overdrive pedals. Um, they don't make these anymore, which is why it looks all kind of uh dirty and and well used, cos it has been well used by me over the years. I got this secondhand quite a few years ago. Um, so let's compare what this sounds like. So this is the bass part without any overdrive. This is with the Drive master with everything at 12 o'clock. Pretty rocking, pretty rocking, um, I'm just gonna adjust these settings a little bit to make it more appropriate, just to make it a little bit more appropriate for, as a, as a bass pedal to, to bring out this part quite a bit. So I've turned the gain up, um, the bass is up a little bit and the middle is down, that makes the tone. Like this. It's an absolutely rocking sound, and of course bass players can have just as much fun with guitar pedals and gear as guitarists can have. I'm gonna teach the rest of this tutorial without any overdrive. I might put it on a much later in the tutorial, but really this is all about learning this part and rocking out with the band. So we don't play in the verses at all. Total silence, and if you're playing with the band, make sure it would be silence as well, we don't want anything ringing out. My bass here and the guitars and bass on the live recording that we did are in standard tuning, and the original recording song too by Blur is in E-flat tuning. So if you wanted to play along to any Blur version, you'd be tuning each string down by a semitone. Again, a lot of the point of this series is to make it easier for you guys to join into the band, so we're in standard tuning. Rest assured, this is the way to play this bass riff, and we're gonna start at the 2nd frets. On the thickest Estring, which would be an F sharp note to the open string. And then open A. Second fret on the A. And I play that with my first finger and then the little finger. At the 4th fret on the A string. That would happen 3 times, and then there is a slight change. That is 2nd fret to open a. 5th fret. And then we go back to the normal riff. Let's jump in with the band now at that chorus, and as we've been doing in this series already, we're slowing it down to 75% so that you can play along. Jam onto this, and then we'll go along to the full recording after this in a short while. Jam along to us, let's have some fun. After that has happened 3 times in the chorus, we then have this second part which goes all of the time when I'm. I need Towards the end of that, And that was the 2nd fret for 1 bar, 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and slide into the 5th fret. And then to the 10th fret. And then we'd play, what in guitar terms we would call a power chord. Which is, so we started at the 10th fret, and then we go 12th fret, 12th fret in this kind of shape. Played the A string twice. The little finger, the 2nd string once. I'm And the sliding is so important. So I slide early and arrive here. At, on the beat, on the beat 11 and 2 and 3 and 4, slide, 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. And you have your eyeline, your sight looking at the place you want your finger to end up, so you're looking at the 5th fret just here. 2 and 3 and 4 and. 2, and now I'm looking here. 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. And it So hopefully you can work out the bass part from that and you could play along, definitely make sure you can play along to that slower version before you have a go to this full version. Uh, but let's jam on to the full band now, so remember we're in standard tuning. If you wanna play along to the Blur version, any version of them doing it, you want to make sure you're in E-flat tuning, tuning down by one fret. You don't have to do that with our version, let's have some fun now. Get those overdrive pedals cranked up if you've got one, and let's play along to song 2 by Blur. too hard, man.
