Originally played tuned down a whole step, this lesson teaches Yesterday in standard tuning for convenience.

We'll cover the chord progression with simplified voicings and introduce a thumb-and-fingers fingerstyle pattern.

Simplified Chord Voicings:

  • G major: no first finger needed for fingerpicking (basically a G5 chord)

  • F# minor 7: Paul McCartney's live approach

- this requires a flat first finger on thinnest three strings, thumb reaching over for bass note

  • F#m7 option 2: individual fingers on each string all in a line (string 6, 4, 3, & 2)

- Choose whichever gets you to that B7 quicker

Fingerstyle Pattern:

  • Thumb: plays root notes

  • Fingers 1-2-3: typically stay on strings 2-3-4

  • Thumb stays ahead of plucking fingers to have them on the correct angle (helps to get good fingerstyle tone!)

Here's how to play the B7 which is a new chord in this Beatles 10 Day course! It's quite an essential chord as it can be a workaround for barre chords but also has it's place in advanced guitar playing too.
