Day 9 - Free Ukulele Starter Course

Hi guys, welcome to day nine. We're nearly there, we're nearly through the 10 days, well done for making it this far. And uh in this video, we're gonna be checking out the key of A, so new chords in this key and the chords that go together well. And then we have 5 recommended songs with chord sheets which are linked to in the description below. If you want to just get straight on and you think you know the chords already and you just want some recommended songs and you've had enough of looking at my face and listening to me waffle on, check out those links and uh have a go at some of those songs. However, for those of you that want to stick around, you can uh check out these chords, the chords that we're looking at in the key of A. Uh, the A major, shouldn't be surprising that one, as that chord is uh the chord that gives the key its name. A major is what we call the one chord. The second chord is B minor. Now we have a couple of options with this one. We can do a little bar, which isn't where, uh, it is where some adults choose to have a drink, but it's also this action of holding down two or more strings, and in this case it would be the thinner uh or the uh lower three strings, 123. And then the third finger or little finger can go here, depending on how. You wish to do it? Another option would be to try and figure out, you know, fingers 12, and 3 like this, and that's the, you know, the little finger stretching, but I don't think that's gonna really work for many people. You want to try and, you know, do this, but, you know, any way you can hold down those frets. We do have a lot more options on the, uh, uke. And, uh, we have the D major chord. And then finally the E major chord. They're the most common ones. And it's the major chords, so the A, the D, and the E which are by far the most common. If you're changing between the D and the E, you may wish to play the um. The D major with fingers 23 and 4 to change to this. Or another great tip with this is if you do the, if you're comfortable with doing the D chord, but you're not comfortable doing the E chord, you can just move this up by 2 rets. And that's, that's gonna work fine in this context, OK, so we kind of have this. That's, that is going to work at least for the song suggestions that I've put in the description below, and it is those changes between the major chords A, D, and the E that you want to practise just to get you ready for what's gonna happen in this key. um. But those 5 song suggestions, I will just give you a quick demo now. I'm hoping to do a full tutorials for these and many more songs in the near future. But I think with the things we've worked through these should be OK for most of you guys. Um, Three Little Birds, um, a a beginner's kind of guitar classic and great for ukulele. Um, so we'd have Don't Worry. That's an acorn, the bad thing. Just changing to the D co. It's gonna be alright. And between that change between the A and the D, again you may wish to use fingers 23 and 4, because we can keep that middle finger down. That would be the little technique I would recommend there. And then we only have the E chord in the verses rise up this morning. Smile with the rising sun, easier option. Three little birds. On sweet song. With melodies pure and true. in I to OK. Um, that's a great option. You can just strum on the beat or do little offbeat kind of strums, 1 and 2 and 3 and 4, and, uh, to give it more of that reggae feel. Um, the second song on my list is Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen. Now this is just, uh, for those of you really that have done the 10 day beginner, uh, guitar course of mine on YouTube, where we looked at this at kind of day two, and here we have the A. And the D chord, kind of born in the USA. I was born in the USA. That's the A chord to the D. USA I was And we just have those two chords. Bruce Springsteen is such a dude, I love him so much. That, that, that would be a great option for a lot of people, especially those that have done my guitar lesson on that song, and you're kind of used to the strumming and all those sorts of things. Um, not too much more you can cover in that one other than. We can get that little melody in there. And uh very similar to to um you know what we went for in the guitar tutorial, just a great option, linked to the tab is below. The next song I have on my list is Have a Nice Day by Stereophonics. This song would originally be in the key of B. Uh, we're doing it in the key of A. And using the A chord and the D chord again for most of this song. And there's also the G chord happens, if you're playing the full proper version, but this would be uh. But um, uh To that G in the verses. Back to the D and then to the A. It's just a great little option again, kind of a beginner's favourite that's always gone down well in private lessons and I've always got a lot of good results from people actually being able to play the whole song kind of straight through. So um yeah, that can be very useful for a lot of people. The next one, an absolute classic, Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond. Sweet Caroline ba ba ba, such a singalong song. Definitely want to get down if you're wanting to do kind of barbecue singalongs or, you know, play ukulele around a campfire or on a beach somewhere. A quick blast of the chorus, sweet. by Good times so That's the E-chord. Remember you could just do that. It's for an easier option. Be inclined And now even the verses, look at the night. And it don't seem so lonely. We fill it up with only 2. OK, following any chord sheet and you'll be totally fine with that one, I am sure. Uh, the last one, just making sure that all of these, you know, I've I've not actually picked any here that have that trickier B minor. It is just another common chord and was an opportunity to look at the barring. But, uh, Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus. This was such a, such a favourite song of my dad's basically, um, and yeah, kind of stuck it in there, I think it's cool. This one would especially be cool if we did, um, you know, not that first finger down. It's literally the whole song. We've got the A chord and then the E chord, the easier E chord in this case. Dan. my hicky breaky heart. I just don't think he'd understand. If you break my heart, Mikey. man. and kill this man OK, and like the whole song, didn't tell the world, you never was my girl. Tongue. You can tell my dog to bite my leg or something. Like the whole thing's just those two chords all the way through. So if, you know, if you're struggling with some of the others, that is fairly easy, but the E-chord is a little bit harder. A lot of practise of the E-chord on that one. That is where we're gonna leave it for day nine. You have all those song options, you don't have to learn them all. Choose your favourites, learn songs that you like.
