We're going to be levelling up our fretting hand, directly leading on from the 2 finger combinations we have looked at in previous Finger Gym lessons.
Like with the previous level, we can use the 'X Up the Fretboard' as a warm up for a couple of minutes at any speed. It really is a great way to get the fretting hand warmed up!
Furthermore, it is essential from here that we also keep in mind any kind of stretches to the arms, hands or little massage-style warm ups we can do to help get the blood flowing before playing guitar.
3 Finger Combinations
Line up fingers 1, 2 & 3 on frets 5, 6 & 7
Pick once, then hammer-on from each string from 1 to 3
Try keep the tempo steady and to not have silence or too much noise between each flick-off
Same fingers 1, 2 & 3 on frets 5, 6 & 7
Pick once, but this time pull/flick off from each string from 3- 1 (reverse of hammer-on)
Try keep the tempo steady and to not have silence or too much noise between each flick-off
These next two combinations are obvious because it's closest to pentatonic and major scale shapes
Try these with Hammer-ons and Flick-offs
Fingers 1-3-4
Fingers 1-2-4
Don't be fooled into thinking all of these combinations and even these techniques are only for lead players, the fact is that higher-level players have a grasp of all these concepts and use them in a variety of playing styles, both on electric and acoustic and across all genres!
