Technique week 8 - Move up the neck
Welcome to week 8 of the Technique weekly challenge!
How do our favourite guitarists move freely up & down the neck? Here we look at an exercise that’s an easy way to move up the neck on just one string!
Exercise 1 - String 1 Run
String 1 - place 1st, 2nd & 3rd fingers on frets 1, 2 & 3
Pick fret 1, 2 then 3, one finger down at a time
Then first finger goes to 3rd fret - pick frets 3, 4 & 5 with 1st, 2nd & 3rd finger
The first finger basically swaps with the 3rd finger to start each new set of notes
This series of notes moves us up by 1 octave in this exercise, allowing us to move positions on the neck but does not necessarily make for ‘more’ notes from position to position.
However, it looks great and has that same freedom of the fretboard that many of our favourite players have!
Exercise 2 - Focus Points
Choose a steady tempo/BPM that keeps a short & equal gap between each set of notes
Try moving exercise 1 to string 6 for a ‘riff’ playing exercise
Ideally, replicate the series of notes on every string for a more comprehensive approach
