The major scale is the foundation of all western musical harmony. Most simple melodies are composed using it and any other scale you learn will often be referred to by it's similarities or differences from the major scale.
C major scale
The major scale is a seven note scale, but is often completed by playing an eighth note, that being the octave of the starting note.
Note that the previous scale (C minor pentatonic) was a 5 note scale (pent-atonic, with pent meaning 5).
