Before diving into technique, it's worth spending time on tone. A lot of players overlook the controls on the guitar itself, going straight to pedals or amp settings. This lesson walks through what your guitar's controls actually do, which pickups suit which styles, and how to get a usable sound from whatever guitar you're playing.
What You'll Learn
• How pickup selection affects your tone
• What the volume and tone knobs on your guitar actually do
• How to get a clean and driven sound from the guitar itself
• Practical tone tips for intermediate level playing
Pickup Selection
The bridge pickup gives you a brighter, sharper tone — great for lead lines and heavy rhythm. The neck pickup is warmer and fuller — well suited to cleaner playing and blues-style lead. The middle position blends both. Learning to instinctively reach for the right pickup for the right situation is a key part of developing your sound at intermediate level.
Volume and Tone Controls
The tone knob on your guitar rolls off the high frequencies as you turn it down — useful for warmer, more vintage sounds. The volume knob can also interact with your amp's gain: rolling it back slightly on a driven amp cleans up the sound without having to touch the amp settings at all. These are simple but powerful tools that are often underused.
