C, F, Am and G is one of the most important chord progressions in popular music. This lesson covers the full range of F chord options — from the beginner-friendly F major 7 shape to the hybrid and full barre chord versions — and then gets you strumming along to a jam track with a pattern that uses a combination of eighth and 16th notes.

What You'll Learn

•       The three main options for playing the F chord

•       A strumming pattern that incorporates 16th note rhythms

•       How to practise the strumming hand in isolation using muted strings

•       How varying your rhythm within a progression creates more musical playing

•       The technique of tapping your foot to lock in with the beat

F Chord Options

You have three main choices for the F chord: the easy F major 7 shape (strings 1–4 only), the hybrid version with the thumb or a partial barre, and the full root 6 barre chord. On electric guitar the full barre is more achievable than on acoustic, but all three have their uses. Understanding which to use and when is part of developing fluency at this level.

The Strumming Pattern

The main pattern for this progression uses a mix of eighth and 16th note strums. The key is keeping the right hand moving even when you're not hitting the strings — that steady internal pulse is what keeps everything tight. Varying the rhythm freely within the progression is also encouraged, as it's one of the hallmarks of more confident intermediate playing.

Practising the Hands Separately

A key tip in this lesson is to mute all the strings and just focus on the strumming hand on its own. Playing the rhythm percussively — with no chords involved — lets you lock in the pattern without the distraction of chord changes. Once that's solid, adding the left hand back in becomes much easier.
