This session is a preview of the upcoming Jazz Course, using Autumn Leaves to introduce some genuinely useful concepts that reach well beyond jazz.
The centrepiece of the lesson is the 2-5-1 chord progression in the key of C: Dm7 to G7 to Cmaj7. Rather than tackling these as full bar chords, the lesson focuses on shell voicings: three-note versions of each chord that are lower in movement, easier on the hands and actually closer to how jazz is really played. The key insight is that these aren't just simplified versions of the real thing, they are the real thing.

From there the lesson zooms out to show how the 2-5-1 sits within the full key of C, with all seven diatonic seventh chords covered as shell voicings: Cmaj7, Dm7, Em7, Fmaj7, G7, Am7 and Bm7b5. Each shape follows the same logic, and once you have the fingering for one, the rest start to make sense.

Autumn Leaves is then used as a real song to put these chords into context. Each chord is demystified using the shell voicing approach, making what looks like an intimidating chart much more approachable.
The lesson then introduces scales and arpeggios as tools for improvising over the changes. The C major scale and D Dorian both work well over the 2-5-1, and following the chord tones of each chord gives you a reliable map for your improvisation, whether you are playing jazz, blues or even metal.

The final section covers chord melody guitar: the idea of playing the melody and the chords simultaneously so you become your own accompaniment. This is demonstrated first with a pick, then broken down as a fingerstyle piece with a percussive slap on beats two and four. The thumb covers the root note, the index and middle fingers take the upper strings, and the knuckle slap lands where those fingers naturally fall to create a snare-like crack. The rhythmic framework is the Charleston rhythm, with upstrokes naturally falling off the beat to give the swing feel its characteristic push.
