Welcome to day 5 of this 10 day Beatles guitar challenge. For beginners. In this video, we're looking at a slightly simplified version of Norwegian wood. We'll need a capo at the 2nd fret, which means that all this song can be played with basic chords. Major. Major, G major, we have D minor. And E A major. We will look in depth at the strumming pattern on this one, which has a different feel. It has this 12, and 3 and 45 and 6 and kind of compound time which can catch some people out, and we will look at how to play this classic melody just with single notes. There's a bonus video on the website that will teach you how to put all of this together and kind of do it. In that fashion. Let's go for a full tutorial for Norwegian wood now, starting off on the D major chord. So with a capo or a capo, at the second fret, this uses the chords. D major, and we can keep on that D major for all the verses, a simple way to do it, especially if you're focusing on the strumming, which I'll talk. In a second, but the other chords we could play in the verse, which keeps it the same as the fancy um. All of this section would be a CA 9. To a G over B, so a G chord but without the middle finger, the root note being the B note on string 5 here. That's the extra part that we could add, or we could just keep it all to the D major, if we're focusing on this strumming pattern, which is a compound times strumming pattern, which means it goes in a cycle of 31 and 2 and 3 and 4 and uh, technically in 12/8. Simple way of doing that, 1 and. Play on the beat or on the counter, a normal volume and play the other two quieter. 123123, and kind of just hit the middle strings. To do the simple version and it still sounds good, or we can do a down, down, up, down, up, and cycle that every 3 pulses, so 12 and. 12 2 and 3 and 12 and 3, and it's the same strumming pattern as Working Class Hero as well, also by kind of primarily written by John Lennon, so 2 and 3 and 45 and 6 and 12 and 3. 5 and 6 and. With the D major chord now, 123456. Just try and do that strumming just with a smaller twist of the wrist, a twist of the wrist, do this. Keep it loose, you know when you kind of go like hm maybe, maybe, just do that with this strumming pattern, that gets all the finesse without it overworking your forearm, you shouldn't feel any pressure around your elbow or tennis elbow or forearm at all. You wanna kind of stroke it like you're stroking a feather, literally. Nice and simple, keep that strumming pattern small, and that's how we get join in with me, 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and uh. Really light. Lightly strumming with a feather. Simple strumming now. And we can go For that change For example, For example, practise that change a little bit more if you need it, but we can move on now to the next section which starts on a D minor chord. She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere. Then it's D minus and I noticed there wasn't a A major. So simple chords, D minor, the top tip is to have those fingers on an angle, elbow always into the side, a bit like you play a C major, have these fingers on an angle, not like this, otherwise you'll struggle to make the reach, really curl over, fingers 2 and 3. Really curl over this knuckle just here, and that first finger is kind of retracted like this, that's how my first finger is for the D minor chord, thumb over the top, muting string 6, so we can actually strum all six strings. uh string 6 is taken out and muted. And that's the full thing, as long as we can do this. That is the whole song. Let's have a play along to this now in a simple strumming fashion like I've just demoed. Then we'll have a look at that melody which we can learn at the end of this video. Let's have a look at this from D major, from the top of the song. You choose what strumming pattern you're comfortable with, ready on the D major chord in 2 and at 3 and a 4. That simple strumming Embellishment Remember like a feather This one. D minor. And it just cycles exactly in that fashion. Let's have a look at that melody now, which uses the D major scale. The D major scale goes on the middle two strings, just as the notes we need for this from D, E, F, G. And B And this melody goes to. 4204. 2040. And then we'll use a couple of other notes. 30, 20. And all of those proportionate to the capo, but this is based on. Let's have a look at this melody now. We have 2. 4204. 2 40. 3020. Picking tip is to see picking like you're writing your name nice and neat and strumming like you're painting a slightly bigger area or a bigger canvas. Both times you're nice and loose with no tension in your wrist, but you are pivoting from the wrist. To do that kind of practise, some scale practise will really help. And that is technically the Dmyxoidian mode, not a scale, cos it would be the D major scale. If we played it like that, more info in that bonus scales lesson, let's have a look at this one more time. We have 4 0 One last time, 3 and 4 and uh. On Or should I say? And that is the same melody. That we play when we played the full version, the thing that adds and is a really cool thing to add. Is that little thing which is called a hammer on a pick. Pick 2 again. And hammer on with the 3rd finger to the 4th fret, the one that we picked before. That makes it a little bit like. That version and also. Really strengthens up your fingers, improves your coordination, and it sounds great. It enables us to have a little bit of phrasing in our lead guitar playing.
