In this video
TNT is similar to the version of Smoke On The Water we learnt in Day 1 but adds a new rhythm!
This simplified one-string version develops the coordination between your index and ring fingers but it's actually the same notes as on the original too - so you can jam along to the song 🎸
Main Learning Points:
Finger positions: first finger at fret 3, third finger at fret 5
New rhythm that tests the fingers
Muting technique between repetitions
Amp Settings:
Boss Katana 'Brown Sound'
5/10 gain (humbuckers sound)
Single coils will sound cleaner - adjust gain up if needed
The overdrive does the work, so let the amp add the power
Advanced Technique:
Index finger muting: Lightly touching (but not pressing) strings 5-1 with the underside of your index finger while playing string 6.
This prevents unwanted string noise and is used extensively by players like John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It's an advanced technique, but getting comfortable with it early will pay huge dividends.
Finally, practice playing the riff four times through without stopping. When you can do this cleanly, try playing along to the original AC/DC recording - it just keeps repeating, making it perfect for practice.
This video from my beginner electric course covers how to play AC/DC style power chords and palm muting techniques in more detail.
This video begins with a recap of the same one string version of TNT, but then shows how we can apply the AC/DC style open string power chords to play this classic song just like the original record.
The video above covers
A5, G5, and D5 power chords with proper palm muting technique
Guitar and pickup differences - humbuckers vs. single coils for rock tone
Amp settings and gain levels for authentic classic rock sound
Rhythm patterns that avoid the snare hit - a classic rock timing secret
Off-beat playing and syncopated rhythms that create rock groove
