In part two of my studio session with Jack from Marmosets, we get properly into the details — up close with his gear, his riffs, and his approach to writing.
Jack walks me through his modified Fender Twin Reverb (rescued from a neighbour's driveway!), his Providence/Fairlane guitars with Monty's Firebird pickups, and his unusual amp setup pairing the Twin with a 1955 Ferrograph reel-to-reel used as a second amp.
We go song by song through the catalogue — Kiss from a Mother, Me Desire My Desires, Running with the Sun in Your Eyes, Cut Back, Major System Error, and Play — exploring the tunings, fuzz pedals, time signature tricks, and chromatic riffs that make up their sound.
Jack also opens up about his influences (Jack White, Primus, Rush, Alex Lifson) and we get into a great conversation about how music theory and feel aren't mutually exclusive.
Essential watching if you're into gear, riff writing, or just want to understand what makes Marmosets tick — and keep an eye out for their new album Cowardice, out 26th
