Here's a quick chat with Andy and Olly from https://ogeepickups.co.uk/
In this video, Andy discusses his decision to upgrade the pickups on his D'Angelico Premiere DC guitar, inspired by his positive experience with a similar setup on his Red D'Angelico XL Mini DC. Andy wanted to install PAF style pickups with a split coil, a choice he found particularly useful for live performances and band rehearsals due to the versatility it offered in terms of tonal options. He believes that upgrading pickups is an essential enhancement for any mid-range guitar, often providing up to 90% of the desired sound improvement, despite the significant role that the guitar and amp also play.
Olly from OGEE Pickups shares that he has been making his own pickups for a couple of years, drawing inspiration from a specific era of PAF pickups, which he designed to have a slightly lower output for a clearer and more open sound. He challenges the common perception that higher output pickups are superior, emphasizing instead the importance of clarity and control over sound. His background in audio technology has taught him that other factors, such as inductance and capacitance, are crucial in understanding a pickup’s true characteristics, beyond just DC resistance.
Olly also touches on the process of winding pickups, noting that while the actual winding takes only about five minutes, the delicate tasks in between are the most time-consuming. He expresses his admiration for the craftsmanship involved. Andy encourages others to explore his work and offerings at OGEE Pickups, where he provides a variety of pickups, including humbuckers, P-90s, and original designs, while also considering the compatibility of these pickups with different guitar models.
