Open String Names

Hi guys, my name's Andy, and in this lesson we're covering the open string names for your guitar so that we know how to get your guitar in tune and just for a bit of general knowledge about the guitar itself. So whether you've got an acoustic guitar that looks like this or an electric guitar, we wanna get your guitar in something called standard tuning which er is as follows. The thickest string needs to be tuned to an E note. The next string needs to be tuned to an A. Next we have the D. Then we have 3rd string is the G. Second string is a B. And finally we have the thinnest string which is an E. Now that can be quite a lot to remember in the early days, and a phrase or a mnemonic can really help you remember these open string names which will be super helpful a little later on in this course. So the phrase I prefer is elephants and donkeys grow big ears. Say that back to me now. They do have big ears don't they? And that takes us from the thickest string to the thinnest string. Elephants and donkeys grow big ears. E A D G B E. Now that does ideally need memorising before you can. Have the skill of tuning a guitar yourself, which we'll be covering in the next video in this series. But this also tells us the letter names of the first four chords we're going to learn in my beginner's course. And it tells you them in order. E. A, D, and G are the first four chords we're going to learn, and that's the name of the thickest strings on your guitar. Now for your general knowledge, those notes are also repeated at what I call the double dot where you will typically have two dots on your guitar up here at 12 fret. That's E, A, D, G, B, E, and they even sound the same, but they're an octave higher, which is the same notes at a higher pitch. You can tell it was the very similar pattern that you just heard, but the second time you heard it, it was an octave higher in pitch. Now you can use any phrase that you wish to do. I'm sure plenty of people, if this is on YouTube in the comments below will say their own favourite. Whichever one helps you is the right one for you. But knowing the open. String names is so essential and you really should take just a little bit of your time, a few minutes or even seconds just to make sure you've got this in your mind because it's absolutely vital.
