Here, I share some common elements of rock riffs and some practical tips on how to come up with your own, even when ideas and inspiration escape you!
Core elements of a rock riff
Power chords, both open and traditional
Pentatonic notes, or some single note pattern
Need more notes? Go chromatic!
Tips on practically coming up with your own rock riff
Start with a drum track you like to define the grove
Use the on beat the off beat and mute so we can hear the drums. Early 4s etc.
Don’t forget the chickas, slides, legato playing and any other phrasing to add character
