Day 2 - Bonus Lesson 2 - The Last Time Solos

In this video

This website-exclusive lesson teaches you the complete solo from ‘The Last Time’, introducing the CAGED system and connecting scale shapes to chord positions.

What You Will Learn:

• How the G major CAGED shape is used

• E minor pentatonic shape one for fills and improvisation

• Alternative E and D major chord voicings

• The Hendrix-style thumb-over chord voicing

• Rake picking technique for expressive bends

• How to use a looper pedal for the best practice routine!

Easy CAGED System Chords

This solo demonstrates perfectly how Keith and Ronnie can combine chords and single notes all into an epic solo. To give more content, I do mention the CAGED system concept – this is just using chord shapes to navigate the fretboard essentially. The great players use this, probably instinctively in many cases, to create cool chord shapes like the E and D major chords at the start of this solo!

The Hendrix Chord Voicing

You'll learn the A major chord/triad played "Hendrix style" with your thumb over the top of the neck (this helps with muting!). This voicing is used by Hendrix, John Frusciante, and countless guitar icons – and this solo provides a great entry point for developing the technique.

Practice with a Looper

This song is perfect for looper pedal practice because it has 3 distinct layers: open chords, the main riff, and lead lines. Recording the chord progression and jamming over it is exactly how you'll develop the free-flowing style the Stones are known for.
