About this course
I walk through what every guitarist should know when they land on a chord and need to do something more interesting with it. Rather than just learning one shape, we explore each chord from beginner options right through to advanced embellishments and voicings that pro players reach for instinctively.
I take you through C, D, G, and A major chords, covering their different shapes across the fretboard, their embellishments, and the riffs and song patterns that naturally live over them. Each chord opens up a whole palette of related sounds that you can mix into your playing straight away.
Along the way we look at the major scale and how it generates every chord in the key, pentatonic and Mixolydian mode flavours, slash chords, add nine and dominant seven sounds, sus two and sus four movement, diminished shapes, triads, the CAGED system positions, and the circle of fifths as a way to understand which keys feel bright, dark, or stable. Song examples run through the wild side of Hendrix, The Beatles and The Stones, Green Day, Oasis, Fleetwood Mac, The Pretty Reckless, New Order, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Cardigans, Deftones, Evanescence, Muse, Linkin Park, and Coldplay. If you want to understand why certain embellishments work over certain chords and build an instinctive feel for the fretboard, this is what you are after.
