About this course

The Chord Explorer series is built around one idea: rather than just learning songs, you learn how to think like a guitarist in any key. Each lesson takes one of the five most important keys on guitar and maps out everything available to you: chord shapes, embellishments, scale positions, diatonic chords and real song examples that make every concept immediately playable.

Starting in C major and working through G, D, A and E, the series builds progressively from beginner-friendly open chord shapes all the way up to CAGED system positions, Mixolydian riffs, octave technique and acoustic blues. A dedicated Circle of Fifths lesson ties the keys together and explains why some chords feel bright, dark, stable or tense, giving you a musical map you can use for the rest of your playing life.

The final two lessons broaden the picture further: a Rhythm Workshop breaks down the handful of core grooves that underpin almost all popular music, and a Top 10 Chord Progressions lesson shows how a small number of foundational patterns sit behind hundreds of hit songs across every genre.

By the end of the course you will:

  • Know all the essential chord embellishments in five keys: major seven, dominant seven, sus two, sus four, add nine and more

  • Understand diatonic chord relationships and how to use them to write and improvise

  • Be able to move around the fretboard confidently in C, G, D, A and E

  • Understand the circle of fifths and how key relationships affect the mood of your music

  • Have a solid grasp of core rhythmic grooves and the ten chord progressions that built popular music

  • Have a toolkit of riffs, licks and ideas drawn from artists including The Cure, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, AC/DC, The Beatles, Stevie Ray Vaughan and many more

What our students say

I first picked up the guitar just over 6 months ago and have been learning completely through Andy's videos on his app. It's great to have so many practice songs with the chords and strumming patterns broken down.

Andy, You my friend are a wizard at instruction. I have just finished your 10 day starter course and already feel like I can play the guitar. Fantastic Andy. You should have seen my face when I pulled off Wild thing!

Greg Anderson

I have been playing for a couple of years now and felt that the Beginner's course might be too easy, but I decided to do the lessons anyway. I am amazed at how much I learned!

I could never have dreamed that in a short space of time I would actually be playing along with some of my favourite songs, but I am and I'm loving it. It's so much easier to learn chords while having fun learning songs, I'm hooked!

Having spent a good 2 years attempting to learn guitar through other programs such as fender play and Yousician, I found that I was making limited progress. Using Andy Guitar I was able to progress much faster. It's great learning with Andy and getting a feel for British rock!

Ceri Rees

Andy's emphasis on learning to play along to real songs and have fun as quickly as possible taught me to make the most of everything I learnt and gave me the confidence to play in public and even to start writing and recording my own songs!

I was amazed how quickly I was able to start playing real songs in a wide range of techniques and styles. Andy really understands how to teach beginners and has lots of courses with clear learning paths right through to intermediate, advanced and specific genres.

We had a wonderful time learning how to play the ukulele with Andy! My 11-year old son has gone from beginner to awesome in a short amount of time and I have been learning to play as well.

When my grandchildren ask me about what I did during the pandemic, I'm going to tell them about how I got stuck at my parents' house learning something I always wanted... music. I can't thank Andy enough!

I started as a beginner just over a year ago, his beginner course was simple to follow and soon had me strumming along to a few songs. I signed up for the full membership and now I'm learning more advanced acoustic guitar. The supporting Discord community is full of helpful folks and we all support each other.

I'm so glad I found Andy guitar. So many fantastic courses, I'm nearly 3 years with Andy now and I can honestly say to anyone serious about wanting to learn, join Andy Guitar! I've learnt so much and met so many good genuine friends. I'm now playing at an intermediate level and plan to stay with Andy and the team throughout my guitar journey.

Andy Guitar's AAA membership gives access to a vast array of beautifully presented courses, but the real benefit is being part of a supportive community. Accessible 24/7, to discuss your issues (and wins) with like minded individuals.

Best thing I did for my guitar journey was to join Andy. Andy's course/videos/resources/feedback are fab and his instruction is calm, clear and understandable. It's like having a private lesson and being part of a group course at the same time. He feeds back directly to your questions and queries.

Andy is the best online guitar teacher and I don't say this lightly. The lessons are well structured in a professional manner taking you from outright beginner to intermediate and beyond. Whether you are wanting to learn acoustic or electric he covers all aspects of playing.

I'm not naturally musical but this has really got me off to a great start. I think the subscription is good value because there is so much you can access and learn from. Highly recommended from me.

Andrew Hilton

Andy starts teaching from the 'This is a guitar' first step. He doesn't assume you know anything and covers it all. Very rich assortment of courses and song tutorials with the added bonus of a discord community where members can help and encourage each other.

Alan

The amount of courses and song videos is unbelievable and add to that the weekly online lesson that Andy takes himself makes learning the guitar a very enjoyable experience.
