Here's how to play the riff section from Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen to coincide with the release of the movie - Bohemian Rhapsody!

Main solo - get the tone!

I'm using my Gibson SG (not idea, but as close as I have to Brians guitar) through a Victory Sheriff 22 amp with a TC electronic 'Cinders' overdrive pedal in place of a treble booster.

Hopefully, you can hear the 'phasing' in my first demo, compared to the 'non-phasing' sound of the rest of the tutorial. This phasing was created in post-production by double tracking the guitar part (copy and paste it to another channel and keep both parts playing at the same time). I panned the guitar parts to reduce phasing slightly, but it's amazing how effective that is at getting the Brain May 'scream' sound from the lead parts! See video at bottom of this page where Brain talks about this himself.

If you enjoy this video, check out this one where I discuss Brian May's playing style and with. Dave Colquhoun, who was actually in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie!

Dave has played on stage with Brian May and Rick Wakeman and was recently involved in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie! Dave's other credits include the We Will Rock You musical, teaching guitar to Bohemian Rhapsody actors Rami Malek (Freddie Mercury) and Gwilym Lee (Brian May) as well as Freddie's Mum! (story at the end of the video!)

Brian May playing Bohemian Rhapsody

For some reason, Brian is playing this a whole tone lower than on the recording (every note is two frets lower than it should be).

This video is very useful for the phrasing and which finger he uses etc. But beware - he's playing it in the wrong key! Maybe Queen were playing it live a tone lower at gigs at the time or something...?
